There are many resources for genealogical research in the Library, and this guide
tries to point out most of them. As experienced genealogical searchers know, however,
no single library or resource is complete, so at the end of this pamphlet are listed other
places that may be helpful.
Each book is given a shelf number at the end of its description. A number alone, like
929.1 indicates that the book is in the circulating collection and may be checked out. A
number with the prefix R indicates that the book is in the Reference Room, and a
number with the prefix R-NJ indicates that the book is in the Jerseyana collection in the
glass-enclosed shelves in the Reference Room. All books are indexed, unless it is
specifically stated otherwise.
Introductory Works
These books serve as handbooks for beginners who are just starting to trace their
family trees. This list is just a selection of more recent or useful books. Other titles
can be found in the circulating collection at 929.1.

Electronic Resources (Online Databases)
The Hunterdon County Library subscribes to two online genealogical databases,
AncestryPlus and HeritageQuest. AncestryPlus has a full file of census images,
and files on military records, immigration records, the Social Security Death Index,
many city directories, and Ancestry World Tree, a user-contributed database.
HeritageQuest Online has over 9,000 printed volumes of family history and local history,
all indexed and searchable, and is currently making indexed images of census records
available online. Because of licensing restrictions, AncestryPlus is available only on computer terminals at the main library on Route 12 in Raritan Township, at the North County Branch in Clinton, and at the South County Branch in Ringoes. HeritageQuest is available at the libraries and at home, for holders of a valid Hunterdon County Library card, by logging in through the Library's website, www.hclibrary.us. Apart from the census images, the content of the two databases is quite different, and genealogists should search both.
Census Records
Federal census records for New Jersey for 1790, 1800 (except Cumberland County), 1810, 1820, and 1890 (except Hudson County) no longer exist. We have microfilms of original Hunterdon County census records from 1830 to 1930 (the latest available) in the Periodicals Room. We also have microfilms of New Jersey state censuses for the years 1855, 1865, 1885, and 1905 ("The information in these censuses is similar to that found in federal censuses, except that most of the 1855 and 1865 censuses list only the head of the household."---Ancestry's Redbook.) Images of microfilms of the original pages of federal censuses are available through the online databases AncestryPlus (complete, but available only at the headquarters library, at North County Branch, and South County Branch) and FamilyQuest (also available at home through "Electronic Resources" on our website).
Printing out census page images is simpler on AncestryPlus, but more flexible (zooming, cropping, etc.) on Heritage Quest.

Legal Records
The Library has microfilm of index cards compiled by Phyliss B. D'Autrechy of records at the County Clerk's office and at the Surrogate's office. These microfilms are available for viewing in our Periodicals Room. The microfilms are in four series alphabetized by names, and one series alphabetized by subject matter. Each index card has the person's name in the upper left-hand corner and the record book and page number in the upper left-hand corner. The Library does not have the records themselves, but use of these indexes will greatly speed the search for an ancestor at the Hall of Records (on Main Street beside the old Court House in Flemington) or at the Surrogate's Office (at the Justice Center, or new Court House, at the corner of Capner and Park Streets in Flemington). Court and land records (Reels 1-11, 16-18) are generally at the Hall of Records; the Surrogate's Office probates wills, and decides guardianships (Reels 12-15).
